Health classes explained
Four tiers: Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard—how they're defined and what determines placement.
Term policies carry different pricing determined by rate classification. Terminology differs slightly between providers, but the sequence follows: Preferred Plus (sometimes called Super Preferred or Elite Preferred), Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard, then special ratings for elevated risk. People who use tobacco are offered parallel categories at higher premiums.
What underwriters look at
Physical characteristics (height, weight), blood vessel pressure and fat levels, familial health patterns involving heart and cancer prior to age 60, driving incident history, prescription medications, line of work and recreational pursuits, and nicotine exposure. Excellent standing in virtually every factor earns the best class; Preferred permits minor variations; Standard Plus and Standard accommodate regulated problems like controlled blood pressure.
How to use the quote tool
Respond truthfully to the wellness question: Excellent corresponds with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus, and Average with Standard. Your rate is determined by that designation; the underwriter validates the final rank after review. Test multiple levels and examine results if unsure, allowing the application to settle it. Choosing an inflated rating won't reduce your final cost—it simply reduces quote precision.
